Free horse shows and farm animals first, then the ticketed rodeos
Last updated · 13 verified listings · every one links to its source
Raleigh has a secret for horse fans: most horse shows at the Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. Horse Complex on the State Fairgrounds are free to watch. Below are the free shows and farm-animal outings we've checked at the source, then the fair's free-admission days that pair with its horse shows, and finally the ticketed rodeos worth knowing about.
These cost money, so they aren't listed as freebies, but they're some of the most unusual nights out in Raleigh.
Miniature Horse Pull, NC State Fair, Hunt Horse Complex main arena, Sat Oct 24 at 7 p.m. $10, kids under 5 free, on top of fair admission. NCDA schedule
EPRA rodeo (Revenge Roughstock), Hunt Horse Complex, Nov 20-21 at 7 p.m. nightly: bull riding, barrel racing, saddle bronc and ranch bronc. Listed on the EPRA schedule. Spectator ticket prices weren't posted when we checked, and it wasn't on the fairgrounds calendar yet, so confirm before you go.
Southern National Draft Horse Pull & Coon Mule Jump (mules jumping a rail from a standstill), Hunt Horse Arena, the evening the Southern Farm Show closes in February 2027. Ticketed: advance tickets are sold in the Jim Graham Building during the show. The organizer's pages disagree on the date (the tentative schedule says Fri Feb 5 at 6 p.m.), so check closer to the show.
Triangle Farms' free-to-watch circuit at the Hunt Horse Complex continues into 2027: Winter I ‘A’ (Jan 28-31), Winter II ‘A’ (Feb 25-28), Spring Indoors I ‘C’ (Mar 12-14), Spring Classic ‘A’ (Mar 18-21), Spring Indoors II ‘C’ (Apr 2-4) and Spring Outdoors ‘C’ (Apr 23-25), per its show calendar. Shows are occasionally canceled, so check the week of. We'll add each one as it gets close.
Frequently asked questions
Are horse shows at the Hunt Horse Complex free to watch?
Most are. Triangle Farms, which runs about ten hunter/jumper shows a year there, says there is no spectator admission at its USEF National and NCHJA “C” shows (spectator policy). During the State Fair, the horse shows are free once you're inside the fair. Special events such as rodeos and horse pulls are ticketed.
Which State Fair days are free to get in?
Kids 5 and under are free every day. In the fair's final week, seniors 65+ get in free on Tue Oct 20, qualifying military plus three guests on Wed Oct 21 (also the Mules & Donkeys Show), and anyone with six cans of food on Thu Oct 22 (also the Extreme Trail course).
When is the next rodeo in Raleigh?
Rodeos at the Hunt Horse Complex are ticketed. The EPRA's schedule lists one there on Nov 20-21, 2026, and the Raleigh Stampede has run each February (2027 dates not announced yet). See the ticketed list above, and always confirm on the organizer's site.
Where can kids see farm animals for free in Raleigh?
Historic Oak View County Park in east Raleigh keeps goats and chickens and is free to visit daily. Once a year, NC State's vet school open house (next: Sat Mar 6, 2027) lets kids milk a cow, free.
Is the Stoneybrook Steeplechase still held?
No. Carolina Horse Park stopped hosting it in 2016, as The Pilot reported. Old ticket pages you may find online are out of date.
